Several years ago now
on a hot summer's day
I went to sit beside my lifelong friend
the Hudson River
Feeling in need of inspiration
and freedom from concerns
I watched as the water in the estuary
rose and fell
ebbing and flowing
as if calmly breathing
as it had done for untold centuries
I watched as the sun moved from east to west
slowly moving toward its celestial resting place
behind the Shaungunk Mountains
... as the Hudson moved from north to south
where it becomes one
with the oceans of the world
From my place on the eastern shore
it seemed as though I was at the point
where they crossed over one another...
just as I, also, felt at a cross-road in my life
Gentle breezes began to stir
as if day and night
were greeting one another
in passing...
And as the river grew ever darker
the light of the sun grew ever brighter...
The river that flowed north to south,
The sun that passed east to west
As I watched the river's water passing
I imagined that my troubles were sinking
below
out of sight
being carried out to sea
to be cleansed in the purifying salt water
of the vast ocean
Silently, I watched the sun setting
Its light shining more and more golden
on me
and at the crossing
white sparkling beads of light
glowing brighter and brighter
danced on the waves...
My mind danced with them
til my vision blurred
and I felt that I had become one with them
Then, as the sun was about to slip out of sight
its golden rays caught my attention once more...
I felt as though my spirit was riding
on the river of light
that poured from the sun
that stirred my heart
like a friend I had known for eons
smiling knowingly
laughing gently
comforting me...
with a promise
lo, I am with you always
until the end of time
